I always remember that one special dress when I read about the Israelites. When holy days rolled around, God told them to get ready, and to sanctify themselves ahead of time. The call would go out, like the one in Joshua 3:5: “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you” (NKJV). Then, the whole camp would turn into a bustle of activity. Clothes were washed (Ex. 19:14), baths were in order, and there was much combing and braiding and oiling of hair. Men would trim their beards and women would put on their jewelry. I guess that’s why we have the saying that cleanliness is next to godliness!

1. Paul says that God’s will for our lives includes our sanctification (1 Thess. 4:3). Sanctification is a pretty big theological-sounding word. What does it mean?

I have a basket at my tubside filled with cleaning utensils: sponges, brushes, loofahs, pumice, and soaps. As helpful as these items are, they do not compare to how clean I feel when I have spent moments in the Lord’s presence, especially when I begin with a confession time.
